Filters

Swimming pool filters come in three main types: sand filters, cartridge filters, and diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filters, each operating differently to keep pool water clean and clear. Sand filters use a bed of specially graded sand to trap dirt and debris as water flows through. Over time, as contaminants accumulate, the filter requires periodic backwashing to flush out the trapped particles. Cartridge filters utilize a pleated fabric-like material to capture dirt, providing superior filtration with a larger surface area, which reduces the need for frequent cleaning. Instead of backwashing, cartridge filters are cleaned by simply removing and rinsing the cartridge. Diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filters offer the finest level of filtration by using a porous powder made from fossilized diatoms that coat a grid inside the filter. This creates an extremely fine filtration layer that captures even the smallest particles, resulting in the clearest water. D.E. filters require backwashing and replenishing the D.E. powder periodically to maintain their efficiency. Each type of filter has its advantages, with sand filters being the most low-maintenance, cartridge filters offering efficiency and ease of use, and D.E. filters providing the highest level of water clarity.

Before

The existing sand filter is severely aged, with 18-year-old sand that has become compacted and ineffective at filtering debris. Over time, the filter has developed leaks, causing water to seep out and reducing its efficiency. The exterior of the filter is worn, with signs of rust, cracks, and buildup from years of use. The system struggles to maintain proper water clarity, making a full replacement necessary to restore optimal filtration performance.

During

To remove the old sand filter, the first step is shutting off the system and disconnecting the plumbing. Instead of trying to move the heavy, sand-filled filter in one piece, the outer shell is carefully cut open to access and remove the old, clumped-up sand. This method makes the removal process easier and more efficient, reducing the weight and making transportation and disposal of the old unit more manageable. Once the sand is fully cleaned out, the remaining filter shell is safely removed and disposed of.

After

A brand-new sand filter is professionally installed in place of the old one, with all plumbing securely reconnected for a seamless fit. Fresh, high-quality filter sand is added, ensuring the system operates efficiently for the upcoming pool season. All connections are double-checked for leaks, and the system is tested to confirm proper function. With the new filter in place, the pool is now ready for crystal-clear water and a trouble-free swimming experience.
